How to Prepare for Your Studio Newborn and Family Photos

Family newborn photo in Monterey photography studio

Welcoming a new baby is such a beautiful time of transition — and capturing these first moments with your entire family is a gift you’ll treasure forever. As a Monterey newborn and family photographer (and a mom myself), I know that the idea of bringing everyone in for photos can feel a little daunting. What if the toddler melts down? What if the baby needs to eat as soon as we arrive? What if family outfits don’t coordinate?

With a little preparation (and a family-friendly studio), your session can be relaxed, smooth, and filled with genuine connection.

Here are my best tips for preparing your whole family for a newborn photo session.

1. Outfits That Work Together

For newborns, soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully and keep the focus on those tiny features. For families, I recommend coordinating outfits in similar tones — for example, mom in a soft cream dress, dad in a light gray shirt, siblings in pastel or earthy tones. Avoid bold logos or distracting patterns so the focus stays on your family.

2. Pack the Essentials

When you’re bringing multiple kids, packing light makes everything easier. Here’s what I suggest:

  • For baby: pacifier, extra outfit, swaddle/blanket, bottle if using.

  • For siblings: a small snack and a favorite comfort item.

  • Extra burp cloths

3. Timing is Key

Newborns are sleepiest in the morning, which is when sessions usually begin. If you have older children, I like to start with family and sibling photos first. That way, little ones can be part of the session right away and then relax afterward while we focus on baby’s portraits.

4. Set Realistic Expectations

Toddlers aren’t meant to sit perfectly still and that’s okay! I’ll guide them with natural prompts to bring out genuine smiles and sibling snuggles. Your newborn may need breaks for feeding or soothing, and I build plenty of time into every session for that.

Bringing your family into the studio for newborn portraits doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With simple outfit choices, a few essentials, and the freedom to relax, we’ll create timeless images that capture the love and connection of this new season.

If you’re ready to book your newborn and family studio session in Monterey, I’d be honored to photograph this special time for you.
