The Unexpected Beauty of a Cloudy Coastal Evening

While Monterey and Carmel offer stunning sunsets and beautiful blue waters, we also have cool, foggy, and overcast days. As a Monterey family photographer, I’ve learned how fast the weather can change in our area. One day will be sunny and 75 and the next day will be sweater weather on the beach.

When we think of golden hour sessions, we often picture bold, glowing skies and golden light spilling across the sand. But some of the most beautiful moments unfold when nature offers us softer light. If the weather forecast looks gloomy on your session date, it’s not always means for worry. Without harsh shadows or squinting light, the sandy beach can become one big softbox and provide gentle, even lighting.

This maternity session took place on an overcast evening at Carmel Beach. The clouds rolled in, the colors muted, and the breeze picked up—but instead of feeling disappointed by the lack of sun, we leaned into the mood of the evening. Check out this before and after of an overcast session:

It was so great seeing this family again for such a special time! With twins on the way, it was time to get together once again. 🥰 Sarah is expecting boy and girl twins and picked the perfect blue and pink floral dress for her maternity photos. We let the kids run around, explore the beach, climb over the driftwood, and stopped for a few photos here and there. I’m so excited for this growing family and have loved my time working together here in California.
