My Essential Flash Gear: 4 Pieces to Master Light Anywhere
Ironically, my off-camera flash journey didn't start with people, it started with homes.
While shooting real estate, I faced lighting conditions that changed drastically from home to home. I wanted a consistent style that didn't rely on the weather or windows of the home, so I turned to flash. It allowed me to show off a home’s features regardless of the natural light, provide perfect color accuracy, and give my portfolio a polished, consistent look.
Over time, I started to crave those same results in my portrait work. While I still love the magic of golden hour for my beach families, I needed a solution for some of the challenges of natural light.
What if a client’s home is dark for a newborn session?
What if my client needs a session time where the sun is too high for even lighting?
What if I need perfectly accurate skin tones in a studio?
What if an energetic toddler moves too quickly for my shutter speed in studio?
The answer was Off-Camera Flash (OCF).
Today, OCF is a crucial part of my business. It’s the polishing touch that ensures my work stays consistent and beautifully lit.
Real life scenarios where flash is helpful:
Freeze the Chaos: Capture energetic toddlers in low-light studios without motion blur.
Bring the Studio With You: Create timeless, beautifully lit newborn photos in client homes, regardless of window light.
Consistent, Soft Lighting: Achieve professionally lit, soft-glow finish for polished Heirloom portraits.
Overpower the Sun: Overpower the harsh midday sun and shadows for high-end beach portraits.
Flash isn’t just a way to make photos brighter, it maintains true colors, accurate skin tones, creates gallery consistency, and equips you to shoot in various lighting scenarios.
Sessions where I always use OCF:
No matter the lighting provided, I always use off-camera flash for:
