The Best Time to Book Your Newborn Photographer (and why timing matters)
The Best Time to Book Your Tampa Newborn Photographer (And Why It's Earlier Than You Think)
You're newly pregnant, you've got a million things on your list, and booking a photographer feels like something you can do later. There's so much happening in those early weeks. But if in-home newborn photos are something you're dreaming about, this is the one thing I'd nudge you to do sooner rather than later.
Here's why.
Newborn photographers book up fast.
This isn't a scare tactic, it's just the reality of how newborn photography works. Most photographers (myself included) only take a limited number of newborn sessions per month based on mom’s due date. Newborn sessions require unhurried time, and I want to be fully present for every single family I photograph.
Tampa families often start reaching out in their second trimester, which means by the time you're in your third trimester, some months are already spoken for. If you have a specific photographer in mind or a specific month you're hoping for, earlier is always better!
The sweet spot for newborn photos is 5 to 14 days old.
Here's something a lot of families don't know going in: the timing of when you do your session matters just as much as booking it. For lifestyle, in-home newborn sessions, the sweet spot is typically within the first two weeks of life.
Why? Your baby is still in that deeply sleepy, curled-up stage. They're easier to settle, more likely to stay snoozy during the session, and those brand new details are all still so fresh. Babies change so much just in the first few weeks of life.
After about two or three weeks, babies start becoming a little more alert and wakeful, which is beautiful in its own way, but changes the flow of a session.
If you spent time in the NICU or weren’t feeling up to photos early in your postpartum experience, I’m always here to chat and make a plan. 🤍
So when should you actually book?
Ideally, somewhere between 20 and 30 weeks. Here's a simple way to think about it:
Second trimester: This is the sweet spot for booking. Your due date is confirmed, you're feeling more settled, and you have time to think through the details without any pressure.
Third trimester: Reach out as soon as possible, there may still be availability, but don't wait.
When you book with me, we set a tentative session date based on your due date and then adjust once your baby actually arrives. So there's no stress about locking in an exact day before your little one makes their entrance.
What happens if baby comes early or late?
Life with a newborn is wonderfully unpredictable. As a mom of 2 myself, I fully understand this and plan for it. Once your baby is here, you just reach out and we'll get your session locked in based on where we land in that golden window. The goal is always to photograph your baby at the right time, not just the scheduled time.
Ready to hold reserve your spot?
If you're expecting and you've been thinking about in-home newborn photos in Tampa, I'd love to chat! You can reach out through my newborn page and we'll figure out the timing together.
Because those first days go faster than anyone warns you. And having photos that actually feel like your family, in your home, in that season? That's something you'll be so glad you have.
