How to Prepare Your Home for a Newborn Photography Session
How to Prepare Your Home for a Newborn Session
If you are expecting a newborn session soon, you might be looking around your house wondering how on earth you are supposed to have it photo-ready with a brand new baby in your arms. Here is the good news. You do not need a spotless, magazine-perfect home for beautiful newborn photos. An at-home lifestyle session is about capturing your family in your real space, not a staged one. A little light preparation is all it takes, and most of it can be done days ahead so you are not scrambling in those first tender newborn weeks.
Here is how to get your home ready without adding stress to an already full season.
Tidy the Rooms We Will Actually Use
We will spend most of our time in just a few spaces, usually the main bedroom, the nursery, and maybe a soft-lit living room. Focus your energy there and let the rest of the house be. Clearing surfaces, tucking away laundry baskets and cords, and fluffing the bed goes a long way. You are not deep cleaning, just clearing the little visual clutter that would otherwise sneak into the background.
If you only have energy for one room, make it your bedroom. Those bed-cuddle photos are some of the most timeless images from a newborn session.
Keep the Beds and Bedding Soft and Simple
Neutral, solid bedding photographs beautifully and keeps all the attention on your baby. White, cream, and soft oatmeal tones are perfect. If your everyday bedding is busy or brightly patterned, having a simple set of neutral sheets ready to swap on makes a lovely difference. The same goes for the crib. A plain fitted sheet in a soft tone is all you need.
Warm the House a Little More Than Usual
Newborns are happiest and sleepiest when they are warm, and a cozy baby is a calm baby. Bumping the thermostat up a few degrees before I arrive helps your little one stay settled and content, especially for any photos with bare feet or a swaddle loosened for those sweet curled-up shots. It might feel a touch warm for the grown-ups, but your baby will thank you.
Think About Your Light
Soft natural light from your windows is a beautiful part of at-home newborn photos, so it helps to know which rooms fill with gentle light during the day. If you are not sure, notice where the prettiest light lands in the morning or early afternoon and we can plan around it. I also bring soft lighting of my own when a room needs a little help, so you never have to worry about a darker space or a cloudy day. All you need to do is point me toward your favorite windows.
Have Baby Essentials Within Reach
Keep the things you will reach for close by so nobody has to go hunting mid-session. A few good ones to have ready: extra diapers and wipes, a pacifier if your baby uses one, a burp cloth or two, and a change of clothes for baby in case of a surprise. A fed, dry, drowsy baby is the secret to a smooth session, so plan to feed right before or during our time together. There is no rush on my end.
Prep Big Siblings and Pets
If you have older children, a little heads-up helps them feel excited rather than overwhelmed. Let them know they get to be in special pictures with the new baby, and have a favorite snack or quiet activity on hand for when they need a break. Pets are welcome too if you would like them included. If not, having someone available to gently keep them in another room during parts of the session keeps things calm.
Give Yourself Grace on the Day
Newborn sessions move at your family's pace, not the clock's. We pause for feedings, diaper changes, and cuddles as often as your baby needs. You do not need to be perfectly put together or have everything just so. The goal is to capture this fleeting, sleepy, brand new season exactly as it is.
Let's Capture These First Days
These early weeks pass so quickly, and an at-home newborn session is one of the most tender ways to hold onto them. If you are expecting or have a new little one at home, I would love to hear from you. Reach out and let's plan a session that feels calm, warm, and entirely like your family.
